How to Extend the Life of Commercial Brooms: Cleaning, Storage, and Bristle Care
Share
A commercial-grade push broom is an investment in facility efficiency. Built with reinforced blocks, shock-absorbing connectors, and high-density synthetic bristles, high-performance brooms are designed to handle years of demanding cleanup. However, even the toughest commercial tools degrade quickly if they are thrown in a corner or neglected after messy shifts.
Curled bristles, rusted handles, and stripped threads are almost always caused by poor storage and maintenance—not wear and tear.
Implementing a simple care routine protects your equipment investment, keeps cleaning shifts efficient, and doubles the operational lifespan of your push brooms.
1. Proper Storage: Stop Storing Brooms on Their Bristles
The single fastest way to ruin a push broom is leaning it against a wall resting on its bristles. Over time, the constant downward weight bends the outer bristle rows out of alignment—a condition known as "bristle splay." Once bristles are permanently bent, the broom loses contact with the floor and skips fine dust entirely.
Correct Storage Techniques
- Hang Them Up: Use heavy-duty wall mounts, utility hooks, or handle clips to hang brooms at least 2 to 3 inches off the ground.
- Store Inverted: If wall space is unavailable, flip the broom upside down so the handle rests on the floor and the bristle block points up toward the ceiling.
- Keep Out of Direct Sunlight: Long-term UV exposure breaks down plastic blocks and degrades synthetic bristle polymers, making them brittle and prone to snapping.
2. Bristle Care: Cleaning & Resetting Bent Bristles
Debris build-up inside the bristle block reduces sweeping friction and transfers grease and dirt onto clean floors. Regular cleaning maintains sanitation and performance.
How to Clean Commercial Bristles
- Combing Out Debris: Use a stiff hand brush, a metal rake comb, or a gloved hand to pull trapped hair, string, wood shavings, and lint out from the base of the block after every heavy shift.
- Rinsing & Degreasing: Wash the bristles using warm water and a mild commercial detergent or degreaser. Avoid harsh solvents that can dissolve synthetic bristle adhesives.
- Air Dry Fully: Hang the broom to air dry completely before storing. Storing a damp broom in an unventilated closet encourages mold, mildew, and odor.
The Hot Water Trick to Fix Splayed Bristles
If your synthetic bristles (polypropylene or nylon) have started to bend or curl out of shape, you can easily reset them back to their original straight profile:
Step 1: Clean out all loose dirt and debris.
Step 2: Submerge ONLY the bent synthetic bristles in hot (not boiling) water for 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 3: Gently comb the warmed bristles straight with a stiff card or comb.
Step 4: Hang the broom upside down until the bristles cool and lock back into position.
3. Connector & Handle Maintenance
While the bristle block gets all the attention, the handle-to-block connection bears the physical load of every sweep.
Preventive Hardware Care
- Reverse the Block Periodically: If your push broom features a dual-threaded socket or symmetrical shock-absorbing connector, unscrew the handle and attach it to the opposite side of the block every few months. This ensures even bristle wear across both sides of the broom. Proper care keeps both your stiff or soft bristle blocks and shock-absorbing aluminum handles performing like new.
- Check the Connector: Ensure your shock-absorbing connectors are clear of packed dirt or mud. Keeping the connector clean allows its internal flex mechanism to properly absorb impact energy during heavy pushes.
- Keep Metal Dry: If you use aluminum or steel handles, wipe down the shaft and threaded ends after wet cleaning to prevent oxidation and thread binding.
Quick Maintenance Checklist for Cleaning Teams
| Frequency | Action Required | Benefit |
| After Every Shift | Hang broom off the floor or store inverted | Prevents bristle bending & permanent splay |
| Weekly | Comb out hair, string, and trapped lint | Maintains sweeping friction and dust capture |
| Monthly | Wash bristles with warm soapy water & air dry | Prevents dirt buildup & cross-contamination |
| Quarterly | Rotate handle 180° to reverse block orientation | Ensures 100% even bristle wear across the head |
